Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about us, our books, and your order.

The Books

What do you write?

We write slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance and romantasy. It's also what we love to read.

Our books are dual POV, featuring fated enemies who can't stay away from each other and fall in love despite impossible odds. Our heroines don't need saving (though they might discover they need a werewolf), while our heroes are dark, dangerous, and morally gray with their own arcs.

We work to build immersive worlds full of magic, danger, and found family. The romance is slow burn but our plots are fast, full of twists, high stakes, and enemies closing in from all sides.

We hope you love them.

Are your books spicy?

Yes! Our love scenes are open door with real tension and earned intimacy.

The heat level varies from series to series, and each subsequent series has gotten a little spicier (we write what we enjoy). You should expect about three or four out of five chili peppers.

Our standalone books (Fated Fairytales) deliver everything in one book. Our multi-book series are true slow burns, with tension building across the full series before the real heat arrives.

We want you to feel the pull between our characters so deeply that when they finally give in, it wrecks you.

Do your books have Happily Ever Afters?

Always. Our couples find their happily ever after, no matter the odds. Their stories are full of yearning and impossible choices, but the destination is worth it.

Are your books appropriate for younger readers?

Our books are written for adults. They contain violence, mature themes, and open-door love scenes.

Are your books standalones or do I need to read the whole series?

It depends on the series.

Our Fated Fairytales books are standalone romances. Each is a complete story with a happily ever after for a single couple.

Wolf Bound, Wolf God, and The Storm series each follow one couple across multiple books, with the HEA in the final book of each series.

What is the reading order for your books?

Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy (one couple per series, chronological order)

Dragon's Gift: The Storm (4 books): Wicked Wish → Dark Storm → Cursed Angel → Broken Skies
Magic Side: Wolf Bound (4 books): Wolf Marked → Untamed Fate → Dark Lies → Shadow Kissed
Ruthless Gods: Wolf God (3 books): Wolf God → Hunter's Kiss → Forsaken Fate

We recommend reading the Wolf Bound series first, which is the best entry into our Magic Side world. Follow it up with the Wolf God series (which is set up by the events and characters in Wolf Bound). Come back for The Storm whenever you like.

Romantasy (interconnected standalones)
Fated Fairytales (2 books): Reign of Cinders and Glass → Kingdom of Roses and Flame

Each book in the series is a complete romance with its own couple and its own ending, so you can read either alone. However, Kingdom of Roses and Flame builds on what happens in Reign of Cinders and Glass, so we'd start there.

Are your books on Kindle Unlimited?

Yes! Kindle Unlimited is now called Kindle+, and all our ebooks are in it. They're also for sale on Amazon in ebook and paperback, but you can get signed copies and special editions here.

Are your books available as audiobooks?

Yes! We're both huge audiobook fans, and every one of our books is on audio, on Audible and Apple Books. Wolf Bound and Wolf God are free to stream with Kindle+, and Fated Fairytales and The Storm are on most audiobook apps and at your library. Each series has two narrators: she reads her chapters, he reads his. See every audiobook and who narrates it.

What is Magic Side?

Magic Side is a hidden supernatural world entwined within modern-day Chicago, shaped by werewolf packs, sorcerers, demons, and ancient power struggles that most humans never see. It sits just off South Side in the middle of Lake Michigan (though you have to have magic running in your veins to see it). It's the setting for both Wolf Bound and The Storm, and we're returning to it for our upcoming vampire trilogy. Same city, new monsters, new rules.

Will there be more Fated Fairytales books?

We're focused on our next project right now, but the Fated Fairytales world has more stories to tell (and we've even seeded a few clues). If you want to be the first to know when we announce something new, join our newsletter.

What's coming next?

We're working on a new paranormal romance series set in the Magic Side world. Vampires this time. More details coming soon. Sign up for our newsletter for progress updates and sneak peeks.

Who are your comp authors?

Ilona Andrews · Patricia Briggs · Jennifer L. Armentrout · Laura Thalassa · Raven Kennedy · Carissa Broadbent · Linsey Hall · C.N. Crawford

Readers who love these authors tend to love our books too. If you're here for supernatural worlds, enemies-to-lovers slow burn, and complex characters, you're part of our pack.

The Two of Us

What's the deal with "Veronica Douglas"?

We're actually two people: a husband and wife writing team. We've been partners for seventeen years, first in archaeology and now in storytelling. We write every book together, trading scenes back and forth and revising them until our voice is seamless. The pen name is a combination of our names.

Who publishes your books?

We do. Magic Side Press is our own imprint.

Being independent means we commission the artists for our covers and interior illustrations (all human, never AI), choose our own narrators, and set our own release schedule (sorry about that, we want to be faster). We even built this website ourselves, which tells you something about how hard we find it to outsource anything.

Most importantly, nobody else decides what we write or how a story ends. The only person we have to please, apart from ourselves, is you.

Wait, you're also archaeologists?

Yup! It's not as glamorous (or dangerous) as Indiana Jones, but we're passionate about our work. We've run projects in the Pacific, Caribbean, and the Middle East, some of them even underwater (with sharks, so on second thought, slightly dangerous).

We started writing in 2020 when covid shut down fieldwork, and our friend and occasional co-author Linsey Hall encouraged us to give it a try. Writing fiction was a shocking break from our dissertations and journal articles (no citations, and you can just make things up) and we were HOOKED. We love ancient history, and we can't help but sprinkle echoes of real history, mythology, and places we've explored into our books, especially in the Dragon's Gift and Wolf Bound series.

Fun fact: we wrote about Sozopol Bulgaria in Cursed Angel, then got to a project there years later! Talk about manifesting…

Who writes what?

We sit four feet apart in our office and draft alternating scenes, then revise (and argue) until you (and we) can't tell who wrote what. It helps we've been finishing each other's sentences for nearly two decades. Are we codependent? Probably.

Do you have a newsletter?

Yes. We send updates every few weeks: behind-the-scenes peeks, cover reveals, release-day deals, and the occasional volcano story. No spam, just books. Join our newsletter and we'll send you a free copy of Fortune's Price, a prequel story to Wolf Marked told from Jaxson's POV.

Are you on social media?

We're on TikTok and Instagram, so check us out for snippets, reels, and release news.

If you want more than a post, there's the newsletter. It's the best place to find our voice, and the only one an algorithm can't take away.

Can I contact you?

Absolutely! As long as you're not a bot, spammer, or scammer (and if you are, please stop flooding our inbox).
We love hearing from readers. We read every message, and answer as many as we can. Use our contact page, and we'll get back to you.

Signed Copies & Shipping

Can I get signed copies of your books?

Yes! We sell signed paperbacks and special editions through our shop. We sign every book ourselves. Shipping is available within the US, and we're looking into international options.

Want it personalized? We're happy to inscribe a name. Just let us know through our contact page right after you order and we'll take care of it.

What are special editions?

Our special editions are collectible hardcovers with premium features: foiled covers, sprayed edges, hand-illustrated endpapers, color maps, and bonus content like exclusive epilogues. We put a lot of time and love into getting them just right. We hope they'll be so beautiful, you can't help but pull them off the shelf just to flip through the crisp, heavy pages.

When will I receive my order?

We pack, sign, and ship every order ourselves, usually within a day or two. Give us up to five business days to get it out the door, since we're occasionally off on a project. After that it comes down to the shipping speed you pick, and here's the honest version: from a small island in the middle of the Pacific, Media Mail can take three to six weeks to reach the mainland, whatever the checkout estimate says. If you want your books quickly, choose Priority Mail.

Where is my order?

Did you choose Media Mail? Then there's a good chance your books are somewhere over the Pacific right now, coming to you by what we can only assume is rowboat. USPS moves budget mail slowly and barely updates the tracking until it's nearly on your doorstep, but it does arrive, rain or shine (just not Sundays or holidays). If it's been more than a month, or something seems off, get in touch and we'll track it down.

A book arrived damaged. What now?

We take the utmost care in getting our books to you. Special editions are inspected and shipped separately in their own custom boxes with thick foam inserts. Veronica hand inspects every paperback before signing it and carefully wraps it herself, then we ship it in padded envelopes or boxes with bubble wrap. If yours arrives genuinely damaged, a bent cover, crushed edges, torn pages, reply to your order confirmation email with a photo and your order number and we'll replace it, no fuss.

Can I return an order?

Signed books and special editions are final sale. However, if your order arrived damaged, you received the wrong item, or something else isn't right, please reply to your order confirmation email with a photo of the damage and your order number and we'll sort it out.

Full details are on our refund policy page.
